Back to school shopping tougher for parents without tax-free week

Ten-year-old Skylar Miscler was all smiles Wednesday with a new pair of sneakers for school. Her mom, Stacy Miscler, drove from Woodsboro to Payless Shoe store at Frederick Towne Mall for the special sale, she said.

This year, retailers shouldn't expect dollars, like those Miscler laid down for new shoes, to be given up easily.

WASHINGTON — Consumer prices jumped sharply in July, pushing the 12-month rate of inflation to 5.6 percent, the government reported Thursday, the highest it’s been in 17 years. The inflation numbers, which were nearly double what had been anticipated, underscored the hurt that American consumers are feeling from soaring food and energy prices. more »
