Local Communities

Frederick County covers 662 square miles and is the largest county area-wise in the state. It has undergone tremendous growth in the past few years and its population now numbers close to 225,000 The county is also among the top 1.5 percent of America's wealthiest counties, according to a report by the U.S. Census Bureau. Within its borders are 12 municipalities and several communities.

20 years ago - Hood College is expecting student population to top 2,000 for the first time when school opens later this month, and college officials credit good publicity and an updated curriculum.

Major Henk Spit of the National Territorial Command (NTC, Netherlands Army Reserve) and his wife Philma, will be presented a medallion by Mayor Ronald Young at 10 a.m. Aug. 23. State Sen. John Derr will also present a Maryland flag to the Spits to honor them for the hospitality they have shown during the past several years to the men and women of the 29th RAOC, the Maryland Army National Guard and the Reservists who have completed their training in the Netherlands.

50 years ago - The low of 49 came about five o’clock this morning according to the official weatherman at the U.S. Weather Station at the airport. This is 20 degrees below normal for this time of year and a drop of 14 degrees from the weekend low of 63, which came on Sunday night.

Wayne E. Schichtl of Fayette, Ia., traveling south on North Market street, was charged with following too close when he struck the right front of a car operated by Bruce M. Randall, Moline, Ill., also going south on North Market street, and also an engine of a train.

100 years ago - The first gun of the political campaign in Frederick County was fired today at Mt. Pleasant, when a flag-pole was raised for the Bryan and Kern Club of that place.

Capt. W. S. Fisher, H. Matthew Galt, Deltoy Smith and Howard A. French, members of the Baltimore Motorcycle Club arrived in this city at 9:15 this morning on a pleasure trip.
