20 years ago - With more than $500,000 already raised, backers of Frederick’s planned Delaplaine Visual Arts Center launched a campaign Thursday for corporate gifts. The corporate donors and individuals targeted by arts center volunteers will be asked for donations of $5,000 to $25,000, said Robert Guelzow, fundraising chairman.
50 years ago - A 16-year-old Emmitsburg area youth was ordered recommitted to the Maryland Training School for Boys in Juvenile Court today by Judge P. M. Schnauffer after testimony that he had been involved in a tavern breaking and entering in which a considerable amount of beer was stolen. A woman who admitted she was “80 some years old” accused her 52-year-old son of assault and battery upon her at a hearing in Magistrate’s court last night but added, “he has been a good boy so don’t be hard on him.”
100 years ago - The case of James A. Butts vs. Samuel C. Butts, a suit for $5,000 damages, was taken up yesterday afternoon before a jury. The plaintiff and defendant are brothers, and reside near Burkittsville. The suit was based upon a charge of alienation of the affections of the plaintiff’s wife. Following a romantic marriage a little over three years ago, Richard McHenry, formerly of Frederick, yesterday instituted proceedings at Hagerstown for a divorce from his wife, May Elizabeth McHenry, now living with her parents in Washington. A special meeting of the Independent Hose Company will be held tonight at 7.30 o’clock, to take action upon the deaths of the late Rufus O. Pettingall and Conrad Brust, who were members of the company.
